Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that you may have questions before making a decision about pet terramation.  To help you make the right decision, we have compiled answers to some of the most common questions about terramation and our process.

Care, Handling, and Respect

How will my pet's remains be handled?

We will handle your pet’s remains with gentle, respectful care at every step.  We treat all pets as the cherished family members they were.

Will my pet be kept separate and identified correctly?

Absolutely.  Unlike in cremation, where pets may not be cremated individually, each pet we handle has their own terramation vessel inside of a locked chamber.  We follow careful identification and tracking practices so your pet’s remains are handled responsibly.

Is the terramation process safe and sanitary?

Yes, completely.  We have designed our terramation process to be contained and professionally managed.  We can explain safety steps and facility practices if you need more detail.

What if my pet had medical implants?

This will not affect the terramation process.  Anything that is not an organic part of your pet will remain when the process is complete and can be easily removed.

What is Terramation? (and what it isn't)

What is Terramation?

Terramation is a gentle process that simulates nature and returns your pet’s remains to nutrient-rich soil (compost).  It is known by other names, including Natural Organic Reduction, Recomposition, and Composting.

Terramation is a sustainable alternative to flame-based cremation.

Is terramation the same as composting?

Essentially, yes.  Terramation is identical in concept (a natural return) but in a controlled aftercare process that we designed specifically for animals and handled with care and oversight.

Is terramation environmentally friendly?

Yes! Terramation is one of the most sustainable choices for pet aftercare.

It mimics nature’s own way of returning life to the soil through gentle, aerobic decomposition, offering these eco-benefits:

  • No fossil fuel use Unlike cremation, which requires high-temperature burners fueled by gas or propane.

  • No toxic emissions  Avoids the CO₂, NOx, and volatile organic compounds produced by cremation.

  • No land disturbance  Does  not require burial space or in humans, long-term cemetery infrastructure.

  • Positive environmental output  Produces nutrient-rich compost that supports new plant life and carbon sequestration.

  • Biodegradable inputs only  We use wood chips, straw, and alfalfa instead of chemical-laden options.

Terramation isn’t just “less harmful”, it is actively regenerative.

Does terramation protect water and soil quality?

Yes. Terramation happens in a controlled setting, ensuring:

  • No leaching of toxins into groundwater

  • No embalming fluids or chemical preservatives (in human terramation)

  • All organic matter is safely broken down into stable, plant-supportive material

Traditional burial can cause long-term soil pollution. Terramation avoids this entirely.

What materials are used during terramation?

Only biodegradable, organic materials are used, including:

  • Straw

  • Wood chips

  • Alfalfa

These materials enhance the microbial activity that breaks down the remains, making the process fully natural and circular.

Can I plant a tree or garden with the compost?

Yes — and it’s one of the most powerful parts of choosing terramation.

  • The soil you receive is full of microbial life, perfect for planting.

  • You can create a memorial garden, a tree planting, or even mix it into a forest restoration site.

  • This turns your pet’s memory into a growing, thriving part of the ecosystem; a tribute that gives back for generations.

Many families say this step offers deep peace, closure, and a renewed sense of connection to nature.
